Artful ATL Prep - Part 2: The Necessary Discomfort of Critique

How feedback from prominent art figures helped refine my Vanishing Point selections and presentation decisions

"I hate criticism. I mean, REALLY don't like to be criticized. But when it comes to art, critique is very important."

Four weeks out from Artful ATL, I participated in a critique session with three prominent art figures recognized in Atlanta and beyond. The timing couldn't have been better as I finalize my image selections and prepare for printing.

In this candid video, I share:

  • My personal struggle with criticism and why I still seek it out

  • How critiques rarely offer what I expect, but always deliver what I need

  • My specific goals for this critique session: image selection, sizing, and printing technique feedback

  • The unexpected recommendation to remove an image I was certain would make the cut

  • How bringing a previous exhibition piece helped demonstrate my aluminum printing with LED backlighting

While I won't reveal all the specific feedback (you'll see the results on June 7th!), this experience provided crucial insights that will shape my final presentation decisions.

The critique process reminds us that advancing our art sometimes requires embracing discomfort and outside perspectives.

Follow along as I continue documenting this journey toward Artful ATL on June 7th at Atlanta Contemporary.
